## Natural Capital Accounting and Valuation of Ecosystem Services

The NCAA is a joint project by the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), the United Nations Environment Programme ([UNEP](https://lemu-web.prie.to/docs/alphabet/unep/)), and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity ([CBD](https://lemu-web.prie.to/docs/alphabet/cbd/)), funded by the European Union. It assists countries in implementing the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting ([SEEA](https://lemu-web.prie.to/docs/alphabet/seea/)) to measure and value ecosystem services and natural capital. The project builds capacity for governments to integrate biodiversity and ecosystem service values into their economic decision-making, planning, and reporting frameworks.

### Relationship to Lemu

NCAA underpins the statistical and accounting frameworks that support Nature Intelligence. By aligning Atlas with [SEEA](https://lemu-web.prie.to/docs/alphabet/seea/)\-based methodologies, Lemu ensures scientific rigour and compatibility with global standards for natural capital accounting.

### Example in Practice

💡

****Mexico**: Integrated ecosystem services into national statistics, improving land-use planning and conservation strategies.

💡

****South Africa**: Applied ecosystem accounting to water resource management, linking biodiversity values with national development goals.

💡

****India**: Used [SEEA](https://lemu-web.prie.to/docs/alphabet/seea/) frameworks to account for forest ecosystem services, supporting better policy for sustainable forestry and carbon management.
